Behind the Scenes Secrets of Running a CrossFit Gym

We’ll get right to it: Running a CrossFit gym can be messy, frustrating, and exhausting. When you have hundreds of members in and out every day, working their butts off and doing a variety of constantly varied, high-intensity movements, facilities take a lot more love and tender care than people might expect at first glance.
All RhinoCo gyms pride themselves on great client experiences, and we’re constantly working behind the scenes to make sure you can focus on what you’re here for: Fitness! Friends! Community! Post-WOD happy hour down the block!
In case you’ve ever been curious what goes on behind the scenes at your friendly neighborhood CrossFit gym, we’ve put together four (perhaps, hopefully) unexpected things our staff does every day to make the whole place better. Most important is #4 — and that’s where you come in!
1. Cleaning happens more often than you think.
Depending on size, membership, climate, season, and schedule, most RhinoCo gyms are cleaned between once and twice per day, every day (yes, even on weekends). Our NYC facilities are often cleaned twice a day, once after morning classes and once at night after the final weight is re-racked. Hundreds of people running, jumping, pulling, and sweating in the same space means we work overtime to keep things sanitary — we’re talking well above code. Every chalky handprint and every sweaty pull-up bar gets hand-cleaned before early morning classes the next day!
2. The smallest things can be the most important.
Paper towels? Check. Regular towels? Check. Bottled water? Check. Toilet paper? Check. Soap? Double check.
There a lot of toiletry and bathroom items that get used every day, more so than most other businesses. Hundreds of showers per day on top of normal bathroom usage means we go through much more of the above than almost any other category of business in the city. Keeping these things stocked and inventoried is almost a full time job in and of itself, but it’s important to ensure people can get in their fitness and still look presentable at a board meeting later in the day.
3. Facilities are a 24/7 job.
If you’ve ever run a fitness facility in New York City, you’re grateful for round-the-clock help. Whether it’s an extra cleaning after a particularly chalky workout or an emergency plumber to make sure the showers are flowing, a lot of the gym’s maintenance work gets done at night between night and morning classes. And that means we’re often here into the wee hours to oversee fixes big and small alike.
4. We really do like feedback!
We work hard to keep the gyms running smoothly, and we like to think we’re pretty darn good at it. But it’s YOUR feedback and honesty that helps us get incrementally better over time. So let us know if something is less than awesome, and we’ll move mountains to fix it! Everyone — coaches, staff, members — is on the same team to build the best physical gym and friendly community possible.
